Handcraft Tailor Academy, Syllabus Fall 2016
Week 7 – 15 The final eight weeks are dedicated to cutting the coat pattern. Figuration will be the main focus for the first week. It is of the upmost importance that the student understand the male figure and its proportions before commencing the draft. Pattern manipulation for posture and figure types will be explained and discussed in great detail. Students will start with the one-piece front and then move to a side-body cut. The corpulent cut will also be examined at great length. Students will learn to style their coats as Single-breasted and Double-breasted. The Morning coat and Evening coat will be examined using samples, patterns and drafting systems. Each student will develop their own style of coat and develop and series of block patterns for their careers. Coat fitting will be thoroughly explained and examined, extensive notes on the subject will be provided. The process of fitting will be taught using class demos and imagery. Models will be brought in so that students will have an opportunity to fit garments for themselves and further their learning through experience. Field trips to men’s suiting stores will give the students the opportunity to see various suit styles, try-on in house garments and meet with drapers to discuss present styles and what is selling in the current market.
